Winter is here and with the days getting shorter and weather taking a nosedive, we want to make sure you are fully equipped with your Winter Home Maintenance checklist to keep your home looking great and operating properly.
INTERIOR:
- Check & reset ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) plugs in bathrooms & main electrical panel
- Test smoke alarms & carbon monoxide detectors
- Clean or replace furnace filter (if required)
- Check or clean your heat recovery ventilator (HRV); wash or replace filter if necessary
- Check ceiling for signs of moisture; uneven distribution of insulation due to wind blowback could cause a build-up of moisture
- Check for condensation & humidity; run ventilation fans to reduce indoor humidity
- Keep blinds open to allow airflow in cold weather to minimize condensation build-up
EXTERIOR:
- If possible, carefully remove snow or ice from roof overhangs & vents (may required a professional)
- Check roofing & flashing for signs of wear or damage (may required a professional)
- Clear snow & ice from all exterior concrete (e.g. walkway, driveway) to avoid potential damage through the freeze/thaw cycles.
- Avoid the use of salts, de-icers or fertilizers
- Check & reset ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI) in exterior outlets
- Check & ensure that air intakes, exhausts & meters are clear of snow Install winter cover for air conditioning unit; when not in use
- Air intake should never be covered
- We recommend to never open the attic hatch during cold temperatures (e.g. -10º Celsius)
