Welcome to Fall! As the leaves change and the weather cools down, we know that you are itching to start your fall home maintenance. With that, we want to provide some tips and checklists to help keep your home looking great and operating properly.
INTERIOR:
- Check caulking for security, cracking, and detachment (eg. tiles, showers & counters
- Have your furnace & heating system checked including the heat recovery ventilator & humidifier (where applicable)
- Check dryer vent to remove lint & other obstructions
- Test smoke alarms & carbon monoxide detectors
- Check ceiling for signs of moisture; uneven distribution of insulation due to wind blowback could cause a build-up of moisture
- Check & reset ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) plugs in bathrooms & main electrical panel
- Check for condensation & humidity; run ventilation fans to reduce indoor humidity
- Keep blinds open to allow airflow in cold weather to minimize condensation build-up
EXTERIOR:
- Check exterior finishes, siding, trim and eavestrough to ensure they are secure
- Check eavestroughs & downspouts for any damage or obstructions; place downspouts down for proper drainage; clear out any debris if necessary
- Check operation of garage doors; lubricate moving parts as needed with silicone spray
- Shut off exterior water supply & drain water lines
- Check roofing & flashing for signs of wear or damage (may require a professional)
- Check & reset ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI) in exterior outlets
- Air intake should never be covered We recommend to never open the attic hatch during cold temperatures (e.g. -10º Celsius)
